DANCE STYLE
DESCRIPTIONS
We are highly committed to our students having a great learning experience. It may take a little patience to make sure you learn the basics in each of the dances you chose before advancing to higher level classes but it will be worth it!
SALSA ON 2
Salsa on 2, also known as "New York Style" salsa, is a vibrant and dynamic dance style that originated in the streets of New York City. Discover the art of seamless partner connections, where you'll communicate not just through touch but through shared rhythms and emotions. Unleash your individuality as you spin, shine, and weave intricate footwork patterns, making the dance uniquely yours. Salsa on 2 is a fusion of cultures, an expression of joy, and a journey that promises to be as exciting as the city that birthed it.
BACHATA
Originating in the heart of the Dominican Republic, this dance form exudes an irresistible blend of sensuality and storytelling. With its intimate connection between partners and intricate footwork, Bachata transports you to a place where music and movement intertwine, creating a dialogue of passion and expression. As you sway to the melodic tunes and embrace the art of leading and following, you'll discover the joy of sharing a genuine connection through dance.
KIZOMBA
Kizomba refers to a musical genre and the dance that accompanies it, being part of Angola’s culture. This genre first spread to Portuguese-speaking countries, to European countries, and finally, to the U.S. and Australia.
Tarraxinha is the sensual dance percussive cousin of Kizomba. The music often has little melody and a much heavier-hitting beat than Kizomba.
MERENGUE
Merengue, a lively and exhilarating dance style hailing from the Dominican Republic, is a perfect choice for anyone eager to embrace the world of Latin dance. With its infectious rhythm and straightforward steps, merengue offers a fantastic entry point for beginners looking to dip their toes into the realm of dance. You'll be swept up in the music's energetic beats, forming connections with your partner and fellow dancers through the shared excitement of this rhythmic journey.
CLASS LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS
FUNDAMENTALS
Start from the beginning! A great way to introduce yourself to a latin dance style. Any course with the term “Fundamental” is an introduction to that dance style. Instructors will cover foot position, timing, lead/follow and arm coordination to get you started on the dance floor.
Recommended to take this level for a minimum of 2 months, take series A and B. Each series is a course and each course is four weeks long. Repeat each level until you are able to demonstrate patterns with proficiency
OPEN LEVEL
These classes will go to the level of the attendees of the class but usually will be more challenging than a Beginner or Fundamentals class. Attendees are advised to have taken some form of dance class in the past even if it was not in the same style you signed up for at Somos Latin Dance.
LEVEL 1
If you've taken our fundamental course, Level 1 classes are now a good fit for you. In this course, we start to have more fun with footwork, partner work, and musicality! Classes will consist of using your fundamentals to create patterns of movements that will start to focus on building a connection to the music.
Recommended to take this level for a minimum of 3 months. Each course is four weeks long. Repeat each level until you can demonstrate patterns with proficiency
LEVEL 2
If you’ve mastered your fundamentals, feel more comfortable using the basics, have also taken Level 1 classes, and have a better understanding of the music, level 2 is a great next step for you. Here you start to enhance your understanding of your partnerwork and level it up with a faster pace and back-to-back turn patterns with little to no basics in between.
Each course is four weeks long. Repeat each level until you can demonstrate patterns with proficiency
WORKSHOPS
Workshops are specifically designed to break down or have a more in-depth approach to the technique of a dance style.
These are usually not progressive and will aim to enhance your understanding of a specific area of the dance style.
FAQs
-
We ask students to wear clothes that allow them to be comfortable and shoes with smooth soles for easy maneuvering of the dance steps.
-
Learning to dance has a varied timeline for each individual. It’s a new skill that requires practice aside from your regularly scheduled class time. Our approach hopes to have you dancing at least the fundamentals after the first two months. Will you be dancing it well? Well, that’s definitely up to you!
-
Since the classes are progressive each month, your registration covers the classes for that month and the style that you register for. At this time we do not offer replacement classes but reach out to info@somoslatindance.com and tell us your situation; we can see if we can offer an alternative solution.
-
No partner is necessary to participate in our classes. Once we reach our partner work instruction, we separate our followers from our leaders and then rotate the leaders so that everyone has a chance to dance with someone.
-
At this time, masks are not required in the class but you can wear them if you feel more comfortable. Sanitizers are provided and bathrooms are available for hand washing. Please wash your hands before entering the class.
